how to backup thunderbird

Here’s how to backup Thunderbird; an email client used by 2.4% of the world. Most of us use our email client more than any other application, so losing your emails and contacts can be devastating.

Here’s how to backup Thunderbird so you can recover you emails, contacts, etc, should your computer fail or data corruption occurs.

Backup Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird stores all your emails, contacts, newsgroup messages, and attachments in a profile folder. In Windows this is kept in a profile folder at %Appdata\Thunderbird\Profiles, or c:\Users\{username}\Appdata\Thunderbird\Profiles.

Thunderbird suggests to shut down Thunderbird and copy everything under the Profiles folder to another destination. An automated backup system, however, should be able to backup this file directly without a copy or a shutdown. Simply include this folder in your backup program.

Here’s Mozilla Thunderbird’s documentation on this.

How to Recover Your Thunderbird Profile

To Recover your Thunderbird profile follow these steps:

  • Reinstall Thunderbird (if required) and configure it for your email address.
  • Close it down and confirm the Profile Folder Location.
  • Restore your Thunderbird files to that location, overwriting the files that are there now.

Next time you open up Thunderbird all your emails and contacts should be back and you’re ready to go!
