Setting up your first online backup

You’re a small business owner, working out of a home office. You’ve already signed up for your cloud backup. This post is all about the configuration of your first online backup. A little time spent up front may save you considerable grief after the fact.

Cloud Backup

The goal here is of course to easily set up a backup and have that backup off-site, so that you’re protected from any local disaster. Out backup is based on the Acronis platfor and all backups are saved within Canada. Your backup data will never leave the country.

What to backup

Before you start your first backup, take a look at what software you use each day. Typically this includes Microsoft Outlook and the Office suite.  You likely have documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc. You may also have financial or customer software that stores its data outside of your normal Desktop, Documents, or Downloads folders. You will want to do a bit of research before you start so that you can ensure all of your data will be captured in the backup.

When to backup

As part of setting up an online backup you will have the option to choose when that backup occurs. You should choose a time that makes sense to you and is outside of your regular working hours. Maybe early morning and an odd time like fifteen minutes after or forty-five minutes after the hour so that your start time is not happening the same time as other activities on your computer.

If you’re setting up multiple online backup jobs then be sure to create separate schedules for them so that the first one has finished before the second one kicks in.

Also, make sure you are selecting daily backups or checking the boxes for Monday through Friday if you are closed on the weekend.

Be Protected

When disaster strikes is not the time to find out you weren’t backing up an important business folder or data. Take the time up front to make sure you capture and backup all your important business files. Not only will you have the peace of mind of knowing everything is protected, your restore will more quickly bring you back to where you need to be to continue on.
